Mud flats in the centre are bounded by two channels. The one to the NW leads to Fareham, while the other channel, to the NE, called Portchester Lake, leads to Port Solent. The entrance to this channel is marked to the west by pile 57 and to the east by pile 95. The whole channel is marked by red piles to west, numbered 57 to 74 (leave to port) and by green piles to the east running from 95 to 75. Above Portchester Castle, the channel becomes narrow but clearly defined by yacht mooring and piles. Nineteen of the piles are lit by navigational lights. Contact the lockmaster on VHF 80 at pile 78.
