Puerto Rico Yacht Charter and Boat Hire

General - Puerto Rico is located in the northeastern Caribbean Sea, east of the Dominican Republic and west of both the United States Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands. It is an unincorporated territory of the USA.

Puerto Rico is in fact a group of islands that includes the main island of Puerto Rico and a number of smaller islands, Mona and Desecheo to the west, Caja de Muertos off the south coast and the larger islands of Vieques and Culebra to the east. The islands were originally discovered by the Christopher Columbus and colonized by the Spanish whose influence can still be widely seen in both architecture and cuisine. Spanish is widely spoken and is the official language.

The choice of charter yachts is not extensive but includes monohull and catamaran bareboats and crewed catamarans. There is however a large fleet of local craft, predominantly motor yachts and sport-fishing boats, and facilities are of a high standard with more than thirty marinas dotted around Puerto Rico's coastline.

Our charter boats are based in Marina Puerto Del Rey in Fajardo on the NE coast. This is ideal base for exploring the Islands of Culebra and Vieques.

The island of Culebra lies approximately 17 miles east of Puerto Rico, 12 miles west of St. Thomas and 9 miles north of Vieques. Culebra's series of bays, peninsulas, and bars create a long and intricate shoreline, some of which end in abrupt cliffs, sandy shores, or mangrove forests. The principal harbor, Ensenada Honda, is considered to be one of the most secure hurricane harbors in the Caribbean.

Vieques lies about 8 miles (13 km) to the east of the Puerto Rican mainland, and measures approximately 21 miles (34 km) long by 4 miles (6 km) wide. The two main towns of Vieques are Isabel Segunda on the northern side of the island, and Esperanza located on the southern side. The island's name is a Spanish spelling of a Native American word said to mean "small island". It also has the nickname "Isla Nena", usually translated from the Spanish as "Little Girl Island!, as a reference to its being perceived as Puerto Rico,s little sister island. The island is a true paradise, at least for those seeking solitude, world-class food and accommodations, and sugary-white-sand beaches.

Highlights ashore on the main island of Puerto Rico include; In the metropolitan area in San Juan they have luxurious hotels with casinos similar to Las Vegas.

The bioluminescent bays near Fajardo and in Vieques. The microscopic organisms that live in every drop of water in these bays will glow when they dart away from movement. Take a kayak or boat tour during a new moon for the best results; they're hard to see during a full moon and impossible to see in sunlight.

El Yunque is Puerto Rico's rain forest and is a must see. It spreads out over a mountain and at any altitude you'll see numerous varieties of plant and animal life. If you're lucky you can catch a glimpse of the endangered Puerto Rican parrot & hear the song of the local Coqui tree frog. There are many hiking trails and the Yokahu tower is a great spot to see the forest from above. Two trails lead you straight down to La Mina waterfalls where you can swim at the bottom of the falls in the cold refreshing water.

You can visit a Plantation. Coffee, sugar cane, and tobacco were the three main agricultural products grown in Puerto Rico. Sugar cane was produced in the hot low-lands by the sea while tobacco and coffee were grown in the mountains. A few coffee plantations are still active or have been turned into museums. Most of them can be found and visited in the mountains region just North of Ponce.

History of the Area - Explorer Christopher Columbus claimed Puerto Rico for Spain in 1493, heralding an influx of Spanish settlers. The newcomers, and the diseases they brought with them, decimated the territory's Taino indian population. The main settlement, San Juan, became an important Spanish outpost. Slaves were brought to the island in the 16th and 17th centuries. The US invaded and occupied Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American War of 1898, ending centuries of rule from Spain. Under American administration Puerto Rico saw growth and development. But nationalist sentiment sometimes spilled over into violence, notably in the 1930s and 1940s and latter violence in the 1970s and 1980s was blamed on a pro-independence group, the Macheteros, or Cane Cutters.
