The islands of Guadeloupe, an overseas département of France, lie in the Caribbean Sea off the northwest coast of South America at 16° 18' N 61° 32' W. The two principal islands are Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre. Other nearby island dependencies of Guadeloupe are Marie-Galante, Désirade Island and the Saintes Islands.
