Remain outside the 10m line to avoid an unmarked rock 2 miles north of Punta del Arrecife. This point lies at the northern end of Isla de Sancti Petri and is marked by a west cardinal buoy. Give the island a generous clearance until the outer leading marks (050º) are in line. From the South - Care is needed of the shoal that which runs out SW from Cabo Trafalgar in excess of 1.5 miles. The Placer de Meca bank, 3.2 miles to the W, may break in heavy seas and should be avoided. Stay 2.5 miles offshore until approaching Cabo Roche, identifiable by the square lighthouse, to avoid the shoal of Lajas de Conil. Once past the cape remain outside the 10m line until the leading marks (050º) are in line. Entrance - Entrance should not be attempted with any onshore swell as the offshore banks may break. In addition entrance should only be attempted on a rising tide, with fair weather and good visibility. First bring the outer leading marks (050º) in line, the aluminium towers are not conspicuous. Turn to 346º when the inner leading marks, also on aluminium towers are in line. The channel is also buoyed and will take into account any shifts in the sandbanks, which are frequent.
