General - Salterns Marina is located in Poole Harbour on the coast of Dorset in southern England. The large, almost landlocked harbour is one of the largest natural harbours in the world. Depths at MLW - Not known. Protection/Shelter - There is good shelter inside the marina. Approach and Entrance - If approaching from the Solent, the entrance is identifiable from the high cliffs of Anvil Point. When nearer, the rocks of Old Harry or Handfast point are clearly visible. The Swash Channel is clearly marked. When approaching from the W beware of the race off Handfast Point on the ebb tide. The harbour is accessible at all states of the tide but entering can be dangerous in very strong S and SE winds. The entrance channel passes between the Training Bank on the W side with Hook Sands to E. Be careful of the Chain Ferry, just at the entrance, as the ebb can run at 3 to 4 knots. There can be a strong tidal stream at the harbour entrance and care is needed, particularly on the spring ebb. Small craft are recommended to approach the entrance using the Boat Channel to the west of the Swash Channel. The East Looe Channel and passing S of Hook Sands should only be attempted when weather and tidal conditions are favourable. Berths & Moorings - 300 alongside.
