The access channel is marked by six starboard hand beacons with a green cone topmark (numbered one to six). The channel is not accessible at all states of tide. Two tide gauges (one in the lock and one on pile number six) indicate the depth of water in the channel, and a red flashing light, situated on the roof of the lock control, indicates when the depth has dropped to less than one metre.
