Newfoundland & Labrador is a Canadian province in the eastern part of the country on the Atlantic Coast. It is made up of the island of Newfoundland off the eastern coast of Canada and Labrador on the mainland to the northwest of Newfoundland Island. The two are separated by the Strait of Belle Isle. Newfoundland & Labrador also includes over 7000 small islands.

The name Newfoundland is derived from English language as "New Found Land", a translation from the Latin Terra Nova. While Labrador comes from the Portuguese lavrador, a title meaning "landholder or ploughman" held by João Fernandes Lavrador the early Portuguese explorer of the region.
