Blue Spring State Park was one of the areas William Bartram described with delight when he explored the St. Johns in the 1760s. Who would believe that a deep, clear spring would bubble up from an underground grotto and maintain a constant temperature of 72 degrees, so that manatees would queue up as if waiting for the next train? But you'll see them here, as Bartram did, particularly in winter, when the mammals seek warmer temperatures along the spring's run. There's a swimming area, though humans give way to manatees here, as elsewhere, by state law. The many springs in this area make the water stunningly clear. Hontoon Island State Park, directly across the river (accessible only by water). The ferry departs from the landing adjacent to the marina. On the 1650-acre island, visitors can view ancient Timucuan shell mounds from the nature trail as they hike. Canoe rentals, primitive camp sites, a few cabins, and boat slips can be arranged through the park.
